As the world looks to October 31st to welcome the 7 billionth person to be born, the UN is already projecting that the population will reach 8 billion by 2025 and 10 billion by 2083. Factors that contribute to the growth rate include the fact that humans are living longer and death rates are decreasing. In many ways, this progress can be seen as progress for humanity.

On September 14th 2011 United Nations Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Population Fund Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin, youth leaders, advocates, men and women all gathered at the United Nations headquarters in New York City for the launch of a global initiative known as : the 7 Billion actions initiative. The approximately 90-minute gathering addressed the challenges, opportunities, spirit, and hope of a world with 7 Billion.

Watch The Health Show on BBC World This Weekend

Be sure to tune into BBC World this weekend to watch a special broadcast of The Health Show where Dr. Sennen Houston of the UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, will be discussing the topic of the world population approaching 7 billion.

We’d like to share with you this Thomson Reuters infographic that highlights the correlation between living standards and fertility.  The high rates of births in developing countries may keep higher numbers of people in poverty unless developmental investments are made for women and girls, in education and living conditions.  The graphic below looks at five countries with the highest and lowest fertility scores.
